Our trip to DC

We are back in San Angelo, for now. We hope to leave for CO in May. It was a great trip to DC and the East Coast. We were able to see things I thought I would never see. If you get a chance go to see DC go, every one should see it at least once.

It is good to be back, we had a nice Christmas with some of our kids and grand kids and great grand kids. Most have gone home now. Lynda and John will be here for a while as they do not know where they will go next. You know she is Dr. Lynda we are very proud of her. Eddie is going back to VA; he is a Second LT and we are proud of him. John Petty is in the Army and is in VA also and we are proud of him. April and her her husband are in the Navy and we are proud of them. IT IS SAFE TO SAY WE ARE PROUD OF ALL OUR FAMILY, KIDS, GRAND KIDS, AND GREAT GRAND KIDS.

Our December Trip 2008

Well, we have seen our grandson Eddie receive his commission in the Marines at Quantico VA, and our grandson John who is in the Army at Virginia Beach VA. It has been a good trip. Our daughter Darlene and her husband Tim along with Eddie's father Eddie were there at the commission also, they have all flown back home. We were able to tour Washington DC for a few days.
Wilma and I are taking out time getting back to San Angelo TX. Tomorrow we will go down the outer banks of NC, and then take I10 maybe.

Summary of Cedar Brakes by Weldon

Summary of Cedar Brakes, by Weldon
This is my opinion, it is the way I see it, so it may not be the way you would see it.
Cedar Brakes is a great place, it has great people running it. I am not sure if I will come back,as there is a lot of America I want to see, am I am not getting any younger. This is my first time to be a Campground Host. I picked Cedar Brakes because it is close to my daughter Laura Lee and her family, and I have enjoyed my time spent with her & her family.
I was able to spend Father's Day with Laura Lee, (Wilma was still in the hospital) for the first time in thirty-seven years. That is the hight light of this summer. It was just the two of us, she brought lunch, & we talked, did some work, and just hung out. I am very proud of her, to tell of all of her accomplishment would take time neither I have to write or you the reader have to read. Laura chose law enforcement as a career, she receive a medal while in Durango CO. She is now working in Beaver UT in the sheriff's office along with Kelly, (her husband), Morgan, (her daughter) is going to college in Cedar City UT.
I was to experience many new things here some bad some good. When we got here Jim (head maintenance man) met us. There was a lot of snow on the ground, he had cleared a path to where we were to set up. He also said he would pull my trailer with the four-wheeler on it to the campground. We were the only ones there, as the campground was not yet open. We had electricity only, (water we had to haul). I had only seen this much snow when going to snow skiing, it snowed on us for six days. Paul (the superintendent) along with Matt (the head ranger) took us around the monument. They made us very welcome. We found out very soon our clothes were not warm enough (hey it was summer, it was 90 in TX). Laura & Kelly let us use some of their coats.
If Laura Lee's visit on Father's Day was the hight light of the season then Wilma's fall was the low of the season. We were cleaning out the fire pits getting ready for the opening of the campground. In #2 camp site, I was shoveling out the pit and Wilma step back and fell on the only rock within twenty feet, she said do not move me (if you know Wilma that is not her). I went to the Fee Booth and ask them to call for help. They call Marcia (ranger & EMT) she call for more help and an ambulance. Wilma ending up in the Hospital here in Cedar City. I was offer no less than two places to stay in Cedar City, one offered to take care of Tank, one offered to let me park the 5th wheel at their home. They did not know me as I had been here for only two weeks. For the three weeks that Wilma was in the hospital & rehab, Tank & I stayed in the trailer at Cedar Brakes. The time went by very slow & we missed Wilma very much, It was hard to be without her, it was like part of me was not here, and you know what part of me was not here for we are one.
Ron and Paula Hamilton, (the other two campground host), have help us very much in that this was our first time as a host. Paula showed Wilma how to make yogurt, it takes about as hour and is very good. They are full timing in a motor home, they were host here last year. They have a blog it is walkaboutwithronandpaula.blogspot.com there you will find pictures & text. Paula takes her camera with here everywhere she goes, I need to do this also. Ron and I have been splitting wood, (he had done it all year), I just starting. The firewood here in Cedar Brakes is free to the campers.
Wilma & I pray each day that we can be a blessing to someone, and if you ask for it and mean it God will give you a chance. Wilma gave a lady some sugar for her coffee, when she had forgot to bring some. She has loaned our lighter to a few campers when they did not have one, remember there is not a store close by. There has been many more some we never knew about and some we have forgotten. A special one I hope I never forget is one day an older man came by. He said he and his wife had been RV'es for many years ,but as he got older they had to give it up, he also had worked in the industry, he had been with Thousand Trails. He had camped over most of the USA, he came to me and said he saw our sign saying you could not picnic in the campground. He said if I did not mind he and his wife would like to just sit in a site for around two hours, he said he missed the campgrounds and feel of them. It was around noon and we had very few people in the campground. He said they would not make a mess and would move if someone came in. I told him to go ahead. Someday I may be that man and Wilma many that woman, I hope someone will let us sat and remember what use to be before we got to old to pull an RV. Someday we may be that man & woman.
We are back in San Angelo, TX. Do I miss Cedar Brakes? Yes, will I come back? I would like to, but there is much to see & a lot of people to meet. I think most people would like to see & Camp Host in Cedar Brakes. It was a great stay. I have to say we missed not being able to get on line or having phone service.
We are going to VA in December & then try to work in Fun Valley CO. this summer (2009).

On the way to San Angelo 9-30-08

9-30-08
We are in Tatum NM, just a few miles from Texas. We should be in Texas later today, we are going the way I like it slow.
Wilma is doing great. We stopped at a BLM yesterday (Monday) and were going to spend the night we were also going to ride the 4-wheeler, after paying our $2.50 we went down to the camping area. We found there were so many flies we could not stay, the trash cans had not been emptied in some time. We left and went on down to Tatum where we are now in a city park with FHU for no charge. A much better deal.
The pictures are of The Valley of Fires in NM.

9-29-08 The Forgotten Post

9-29-08
I thought this got posted a few days ago. The pictures you see of a canyon are of Canyon de Chelly in AZ. This was the end of a quest of mine that began around 1960. I saw a movie taken in this canyon with Gregory Peck and wanted to see the canyon every since. Well I made it, I saw the canyon and it is worth seeing.
We leave today from Valley of Fires do not know where we will stop.

9-28-08
Hey we are in New Mexico, we are at the Valley of Fires, a BLM recreation area 4 miles west of Carrizozo NM. We went on a walk this AM the Malpais Nature Trail, it is a big lava flow, (127 square miles).
I went to pay this AM and was told today & tomorrow are free days. We will enjoy this good weather and nice RV park.

On the Road Again

We are getting ready to hit the road. The campground will close 9-22-08, we should leave on the 23rd. Taking our time going to Texas; we are going by Canyon de Chelly in AZ, then make a stop or two in NM.
The low has been in the low 40 or mid to hi 30 so far. We are still looking for snow before we leave. The highs have been in the 50s. The campers have slowed down as school has started, and the weather is colder. Wilma is painting garbage cans for next year & I have been taking the seats off of the picnic tables. As this area will have 15 to 20 feet of snow, you have to do things I would ha

8-27-08 Changes in Cedar Brakes

8-27-08
Changes in Cedar Brakes
There are a lot of changes going on, in color & in personal, the weather is also getting colder.
All of the school kids have gone, the seasonal help will soon. There will be left Paul (the superintendent), Matt, (the head ranger), Tina, (the office manger), Rick, (the head maintenance), and Jim, (Rick's helper) left. Ron and Paula (the other camp hosts) will leave on 9-15-08, and we will leave around the first of October.
This monument will not close during the winter as they have cross country skiing & snowmobiling.
The color has change all year long, when one flower stops blooming another one will start. I do not know which time the color was the best, now we have some plants turning golden due to winter coming.

These were white in the spring

8-27-08 A day for catching up & a hike

8-27-08
A day for catching up
Today started slow, all but one camper left, and we only had eight to start with, and in four sites were a group of cyclist. Wilma & I did some cleaning on the RV, that is she started & then I felt bad watching her so I did something also. Wilma did the windows (she found some that need work), she also change the filter in the AC, and vacuum. While she did this I cleaned out two of the bays, before we leave in October we need to go over the 5th wheel & pickup. This is a good time to start getting ready to go.
We hiked almost to the visitor center for the second day in a row. Wilma is a lot better, she says on 9-9-08 (when she goes back to the Doctor) she is going to walk in without the cane. Bet she does not use it either.
I fixed grilled chicken thighs, fresh zucchini, and mac & cheese for supper. Wilma read while I typed this (she also did my spelling).
We have had to campers come in while I was typing this at 9:00 PM, (one has a motor home that has leaving jacks do not work), the second one got the site the first one wanted while they were talking to me about a level site, but they were nice enough to move.
Before going to bed at 10:00 we had a snack of ice cream and fresh strawberries.

8-28-08 It is a tough job

8-28-08
This morning as I took Tank for his walk we came up to the camper in # 28. He was on a 1997 Goldwing Honda, (he bought on E-Bay). He was from Wichita Falls, Texas. We talked for about 45 minutes, (Wilma was about to send the cops after Tank). He was a very interesting man just retired, and this was his first trip after being retired the trip would last for 30 days. His wife was unable to go, but she wanted him to go, (he called her each day).
It is now 68 out side and was 55 for a low last night, we should hit 70 today. There is a north wind blowing, not hard just a breeze.
We got up at 7:00 & had hot tea & coffee, after Tanks walk around 10:00 we had breakfast eggs & toast (the toast was on home made bread). For lunch we had a pita sandwich. For supper it will be chicken & dumpling, then to bed at 9:00.
I will clean the restrooms & walk the campground about 4 times, Wilma is going to go to the visitor center for a few hours. I know it is a tough job but someone got to do it.

8-29-08 Day in the life of a camphost

8-29-08 Day in the life of a camp host
This is a wonderful day low last night of 52 and a high of 71, wonderful sunshine. After Tank and I went for our walk we came back to pancakes with strawberries, and syrup. Later I split some wood and Wilma did a litter check and put some more pay envelopes out, I also did a restroom check. After lunch of a pita sandwich Wilma went to the maintenance building with Paula (other camp host) where they were getting some garbage cans ready to paint. Ron (other camp host) spotted some smoke, he called me to see I saw the same thing, (I did) he then called it in. They already had fire trucks on it.
This afternoon we will make at least two rounds in the camp ground and be around to answer questions. So go the life of a camp host.
Tonight we will have a star party, what is a star party? There are some astronomers coming up from Las Vega AZ. They will give a talk with a power point presentation on stars then let all who wants to look through their telescopes.

8-31-08

8-31-08
We had rain last night around ¼ inch but it came in a short time with some hail. The hail up here is small and soft, in the four times it has hail, that is. The low was 47 it is only 48 now at 10:00 AM, very cloudy, good weather for soup or stew, I have put on some stew. For breakfast we had eggs and toast with home made bread.
Wilma gave a little boy some paper to help his family start a fire as the wood was wet from the rain, they had made two trips to get some kindling, we could tell by the smoke that they were having a hard time starting the fire.
We were told it might snow, but as yet it has not, we do expect snow before we leave.

8-18-08 Ted & Hummingbirds

8-18-08 Ted & Hummingbirds
It is raining, the temp outside is 57, Wilma & Tank are asleep, a good time to write. Wilma, Tank & I were going to take the 4-wheeler out for the first time today, but as I said it is raining
We put out a feeder for the Hummingbirds Friday & we have been visited by a lot of birds, I have a picture of four at one time. As you know the Hummers are very protected of their space, which makes for a lot of fun to watch. We did have one that flew into the window (Wilma had a vase of red flowers on the table), it sat on the railing for a while then flew off.
We run into Ted when we first got here for training. He was in maintenance therefore he & I worked a lot together in the beginning, Ted was good company for me while Wilma was in the hospital. Working side by side we talked quite a bit, he told me of his dreams of what he would like to do after finishing college, his major is civil engineering. I have no doubt he can fulfill his dreams as long as he keep them & works hard & does the steps one at a time to get there. We also played 42, dominoes, & chess. Ted came over to the trailer some. Wilma fixed pancakes for us (Ted, Wilma & I) a few times. When Ted left he brought over what grocery's he was not going to use. Before he left he brought over his girlfriend (Melonie) & his dad, we were able to watch the Cowboys & Broncos play (at Brian Head). One of the things that is nice about what we did (volunteering) is you make good friends which should last a lifetime, (no ones has to many friends).
I am a great believer in the fact when your dreams die, a large part of you die, so never let your dreams die, hang on to them, even thou they may look impossible, you can never tell. A man without a dream is a man without hope & a man without hope is a dead man.

8-20-08 A Great Day

8-20-08 A great day
Beautiful morning, sun shining, it is 53 out side ( if you are in the sunshine it is warm in the shade you need a coat), low last nite was 47 hi yesterday was 66, ( the weather is getting cooler we should have snow in around 30 days.
Wilma is getting better & better, Tank's nail is good as new. I was able to jog some, a great day. We had a young couple come to our trailer wanted to know what to do, their young boy had fell off the picnic table and hid his head on a rock, ( it had bled some). We told then Cedar City was only 30 minute away and they had a good hospital, (that is where Wilma went), we also told them we had a first aid kit. They went to Cedar City and were back by 9:30. The boy was ok. This morning a lady came by and had left her sugar at home and needed some for coffee (we gave her some sugar and told her not to pay us back).
What a dinner we had last nite. While in Cedar City last Thursday we went to the thrift store and bought a grill (Hamilton Beach) for $12.00 and a bread maker (Hitachi) for $10.00, (they were used, but look as if they had never been used). We also had some zucchini which was given to us by one of the employee here. We put onion with the squash along with butter, (it was good) and grilled a chicken breast on the $12.00 grill. What a supper. Wilma is going to make some bread soon, I can hardly wait.

Time with Laddie & Lake

8-12-08
Well great news ,Wilma is doing great, people cannot believe how fast she is recovering and getting back to normal. Now she has a way to go, but she has come a long way. Tank's nail has grown out past the quick, and we are all so happy. We are sad that Laddie & Lake (my brother and his wife from east of Dallas) have left, but we had a great time while they were here. We did a lot of thing while they were here & I took some pictures some I will post now.
We would like to thank Laddie & Lake for using their car for all our running around, we went somewhere each day, now we still did our work, but you can schedule most of it to do when it is convenient. I am sure I did not get all the pictures I will wish I had taken, but that is my fault. Now Lake took a lot more than I did & she will tweak them until they look great ,she will also delete the ones that are not good. She does a lot better job than I do, how do you say patience.
Lake told me I need to do a lot more posting, like what we do each day. Laddie will be sending us an antenna & booster for our cell phone and air card, we hope we will then be able to post from the campground & also talk from here, I hope it works out. Not having TV is not really to bad, but not being able to talk to love ones and get on line is bad.
I will be writing a summary of our experience here after we leave.

7-26-08 Monsoon

7-26-08
The hi today was 68 & the low last night was 53. That is not bad for July (which is the warmest month here in Cedar Brakes). July & August is the monsoon season here.
This evening as Wilma, Tank, & I were passing out some survey cards for people to fill out and mail in telling what they think of the monument. They mail them in to a reporting agency. It started to rain & I said this will not last long, (it then started raining harder & then hailing) so much for me predicting the weather. You should have seen Tank he does not like rain much less hail. He did not want to leave a tree for the edge of the restroom, or the edge of the restroom for the trailer. He would hide behind Wilma & I. It has now stopped, (well I thought it had). These afternoon showers are a part of the mountains. It may rain an inch. Heck it may rain all night.
It could not get better I am setting here with Wilma & Tank drinking hot tea & looking out the window at a scene that could be on a postcard, we are running a heater in July. At any moment an Elk or Deer or a Coyote my come into my scene hay Sheep my enter the scene also.

7-20-08

7-20-08
Wilma is doing better & better, I should not tell this but I will (not smart). Saturday 7-19-08, while I went to help on a wreck (more about it later) Wilma was to be at the visitor center at 1:00, and I was not back (our pick-up was here) so what does she do. WILMA TAKES A ½ MILE HIKE ON HER CRUTCHES. The trail is not flat, part of the way she walked sideways, to get through. Yes she is doing great. I have not made the hike yet.
Tank had a mishap this week he was jumping off the couch and caught his nail in a chair and it pulled off. I mean Wilma picked the nail up off the floor. It bleed some and we put a sock on it with some cream. He is doing much better.
The wildflower festival is over today, but the flower are great, everyday some new ones bloom. We only had two open sites in the campground last night.
Now to the wreck it was between a Harley Davidson & a mini van, it happened on an S curve at the top of a hill in Cedar Brakes. We heard the call on our radio & Ted [a friend of our(22 year old from New Mexico) working here for the summer for college credit] went to see if we could help. We were able to help with traffic. Ron & Paula (the other camp host) were already there. I was able to let Paula use my radio (as Ron & Paula could not see each other & were trying to control the traffic). Ted & I helped where we were needed to keep the traffic moving. After the event was over Mat (out Chief Ranger) had a meeting with all involved. It was to see what went well & where we could improve. He thought we did well, we should have brought some more radios & use a difference channel. We will be getting some more safety vests & signs to use. Wilma & I will be carrying safety vests in our truck. We will also answer any call where traffic safety is involved or where we might be of help. A girl was driving the HD she was carried to the hospital, they are having a motorcycle rally at Brian Head (about 600 came). We also had a wreck where only one was involved, it was also a HD.

Twenty-five pounds lighter what do you have????

I know this is late

6-27-08
I do not know where to start. Lets start with some Navajo Indian students coming over to volunteer here at Cedar Breaks. There were 21 that showed up. They had planned to have them do some fence work, but with that number I was asked if I could use some in the campground. Of course I said yes. We have some sites that needed some grass & weeds removed. They were asked who wanted to do what, it went about 50/50 so that was good. They worked quite good; they were from the local college. I talked to one young man who was working very hard; he did about twice the others did. He is working on his masters in criminology & forensic science a real live CSI. He also plays football. I thank he is going to be somebody someday.
The most exciting news of the week is WILMA WALKED ALL THE WAY AROUND THE CAMPGROUND; she did use her walker. She is doing very well and is going to try to sleep in the bed tonight instead of on the couch.

Wilma,s post

July 7, 2008
Well it has been awhile since our last update. Weldon had the intestinal flu for 6 days. He is just beginning to feel normal. It was the same thing I started having in rehab and it lasted 6 days for me too. It had been two weeks since I was sick so we were surprised that he got it after that much time.
I go to the doctor Thursday when he will tell me when I can begin trying to walk on my left leg. Yes, I am still on crutches but my leg is beginning to feel like my leg again. We are going to visit Laura Lee, Weldon's youngest daughter, tomorrow in Beaver, UT. She is a deputy sheriff and has different days off each week. She is fixing dinner for us and her inlaws, which she wants us to meet. I also have to get a blood test again tomorrow morning in Cedar City because I am on coumadin. Hope it is the last one.
We had a neat 4th of July evening. Several of the young students working here at the park came over and brought hamburger meat and hot dogs. They cooked them on the grill outside and we had hamburgers and hot dogs. The other camp host couple joined us as well. Weldon had hung out his American flag banner for the 4th. (The other camp host lady said it looked like a used car sale). After the meal was over, most of them headed over to Brianhead for the fireworks display. It is a small community nearby and is a ski resort in winter. We went on to bed.
We saw some young elk playing down in the meadow that same evening.
We had a full campground for July 3, 4, and 5th. Had to turn some folks away.
I am having withdrawal pains from no TV, no internet, no telephone. It is tough but somehow the days go by. It is a different life. Weldon has lost 20 pounds! I guess it is partly the altitude, 10,350 ft. I told him I wish he worked half this hard at home! We haven't gotten to do any 4 wheeling yet. The wild flowers are vibrant. Some grow here that don't grow any where else, partly because of the soil, and partly the altitude.
We have caught 10 mice and two ground squirrels in Weldon's special trap. We didn't mean to get the ground squirrels.
We have 7 Utah University students here to volunteer to do work on the fence and campground. Some of the sites need reconditioning. They are staying in two campsites. This campground is one step up from primitive camping. There is no electricity except in the restrooms. There are no showers. They may add showers in the next year or so. Water is scattered in various places around the campground. Our site has full hookups including electricity, water and sewer.

Sunday 6-29-08

We went to TLC again today; preaching great, music great, I must get use to the very informal dress. I know clothes do not make one holy.

Wilma is sleeping better & Tank & I sure like her in the bed with us.

Wilma & I had a quesidilla burger at Applebees; we split it & itwas good. We are on the Wal-Mart lot so as to be on line, I will buy a few thing here also.

Wilma is doing great. Guess what the low last night was 52 and the hi today was 74.
We are going to Cedar City in the morning to get her staples out (she has 25) hope the Dr. is fast or we will be there a long time. I know I bet a nurse does it.
I am going to show you some of the city. They have some wide streets and the Post Office looks new. They have an Old Town, an Iron Museum, and of course a Super Center, it is bigger than either one in San Angelo, it is also laid out strange. Take a look at the Dr. offices. All the medical building are in one part of town even the animal hospital.
The weather has been great.

This is the Doctors' offices Wilma's Doctors' office is on the left (shot 1) on the left

Boy I am getting late writing this up. Wilma is doing fine now; she is over the stomach virus she caught in rehab and now can eat anything she wants. Tank is great & I am fine; I am going to take my Saturday night bath in a few minutes.
I have a picture of Wilma's Rock for you to see; they may make a shrine out of it. You know Lincoln slept here; well why not Wilma fell here.
Tank is turning out to be quite an ambassador; all the kids love him from 3 to 78 years of age. One 12 year old girl had to stop by the trailer & say bye to Tank as they left; he was on the porch with Wilma and she came up & petted him & hugged his neck. The girl's dad parked the car and he and mom got out with her for the good bye. You should have seen Tank, the big ham just ate it up.
We are going to a new Church Sunday called TLC. A nurse from the hospital invited us to come; I do not know much about it as yet. Her husband plays in the band.
I am going to try & post some pictures of flowers. Would you believe we have wild celery growing up here. I will try & get a picture of it when it blooms.
From Wilma:
I go to the doctor Tuesday. He will x-ray my leg and tell me how much weight I can put on it. I am getting tired of the crutches. Weldon also gets tired of pushing my wheelchair. I really don't get out much in it as the road is not very smooth. I've only been around the park one time in the wheelchair.
