Working with the National Forest

Wilma & I are doing some work for the NF. We are cutting away brush & the limbs of trees that block your view down the road or that are in the road. Tank's got the easy job; he is our boss & he wants to be parked in a shade everytime. I have to say though he has not got us run over yet by car or truck, so he is doing a good job. We did 6.4 miles in just seven hours and that is only one side, we are not near 1/2 through. It is nice to get out in the forest and what we are doing needs to be done. Hunting season started today (8-29-09); bow season. There was a lot of traffic on the road. I just wish we had done this last week, but it is cooler now. The hi today was 72 with a low of 47.

A New Trail

Our high today was 68 which happened at 8:00 PM; our low was 45.

We went on a new trail today. It is on a part of the V A Poma Ranch which is across the main road. We started at 8140 ft and the top was 8613 ft. The hike took us two hours. We took pictures and no one was in a hurry. The trees were very large & very pretty. I took forty pictures, but do not worry I did not post all of them. We saw a rare Horned Toad. You can click on it and it will be full size, then hit the back button to go back. Glen our foreman had cut the trail and led the walk. Also on the hike was Karen, (Ranch Manger) Dotty, (Audubon Society) and her husband Hal, Randi(our Photographer), Wilma, (my Wife) & me. After the hike we all came back to the Ranch for lunch. It was a nice morning.

Back to the toad, I have never seen one this color. It has a rust color on the back and around the head. All I can think of is it has the color because of the pine needles as they are that color when they fall so that he is camoflaged. We saw a young one and it was a gray color, like the ones I am used to. No I did not color the big one. We saw a gray one on Sally's Overlook also. If you want to see one just come on up here and look.

The last picture is of the Ranch house just before a rain.

One of our days

Today we had one cabin to clean which Wilma, Karen, & I all three worked on. Karen is the Boss & a very nice lady, she runs V A Poma Ranch for her mother who is a very young lady of 91.

I have posted some more pictures 0f Sally's Overlook and Piedra Falls which are close to this Ranch. In the tree picture I was standing at the base of the falls. The tree was growing in a place where it looked impossible for anything to grow.

Today it rained & was cool with a hi of 65, we had a low of 54 last nite.

I hope to post more often as we now have wi-fi in our trailer. We do not miss the TV or Phone very much but we like the net. We can watch TV in the Ranch house, but do not do it very often there is also a phone there. We also had the net in the Ranch house, but now have it in the trailer.

Sunday Nite 8-23-09

We said goodbye to Laddie & Lake tonite. Today was her birthday. It was very nice to have them here and do things with them. You need to keep family & friends close even if you do not get to see them often. We have E-Mail, Blogs, Phones, and you can even write letters. I know the younger people who read this may not know what that is. Our lives are all busy but we must take the time to stay in touch. Just stay in contact, that is it, in any way you wish. We will miss Laddie & Lake but will look forward to seeing them whenever we can. Until then we will E-Mail, Phone I will have our Blog, and we will probably not write letters.

Take note of the color in the pictures from the Hot Springs in Pagosa Springs.

Sally's Overlook is something you need to see. A picture will not show the depth.

Piedra's Falls is a short hike of about one half mile in each direction.

The New Trail has some wonderful trees and some great view of the Ranch.

New Post

This is a new post to show a few pictures (three) that I have not put up so far. The first one is of our yard (yes Lynda I have left it up all summer) Lynda could not believe I have not taken the awning down as most of you know if you have much wind you must lower the awning. We are in a very woody area, so not much wind.

The second one is of the owner of the ranch she is 91 years of age. A very nice lady and she come up here every now and then.

I just liked this rock.

Thursday we are going with Laddie & Lake on a little road trip will have picture later. Laddie is my brother & Lake is his wife. Wilma did not help with this post.
Remember spelling & wording do not count as this is not school & I am as old as dirt.

Our three day trip

Last week Wilma, Tank, & I took three days to complete a quest I had started in the early 1960s. To do all six of the jeep trail passes in this part of CO. All are over 10,000 ft & most over 12,000 ft; the tallest being 13,100. We did two this trip; Stony pass was 12,650 & the other one, Cinnamon was 12,600. Stony was the one we had not made. They may have added more to the list, but not to my list. The six passes are Black Bear, Imogene, Ophir, Engineer, Cinnamon, & Stony.

We went by the Rio Grande Reservoir to Lost Trail Campground. Lost Trail is a NF campground and there is no fee. We were close to the begining of the Rio Grande river. After setting up the tent we had a quick supper of sandwiches we went to bed so as to get an early start.

We had breakfast with toast and hot tea & coffee, & started out. Before we had gone very far we came upon a man & his son from our campground, they were stopped because of a water crossing he was unsure of. He asked me if we could make it I told him I was sure I could but advised him that he should turn around. We then started up Stony, I found it was a lot of rock crawling. We do not have any pictures of the rocks as we were trying to stay on the 4-wheeler. Coming to an overlook we stopped for a picture of Wilma, Tank, & the 4-wheeler. We had our ponchos & it was a good thing as it rained then hailed, then rained then hailed you get the idea. The 4-wheeler did not like running over 11,000 ft and gave us problems. We had to clean the spark plug after it totally stopped running. It then ran OK till we got back to 11,000 ft. We weren't sure we would make it but we did. We do not have pictures of our trip over Cinnamon as our camera messed up.

When the day was over we logged 67.7 miles in nine hours of at least eight on the 4wheeler. The last 10 miles or so were the hardest I have ever done so far, and we had saddles sores to prove it.

Flowers from the High Country

I never am so amazed at the wonderful flowers you find in the High Country. The growing season is very short and yet there are flowers blooming at all time from the first melting of the winter snow till the coming of the next winters snow. I wonder if there are flowers blooming under the snow?
