On the way to San Angelo 9-30-08

9-30-08
We are in Tatum NM, just a few miles from Texas. We should be in Texas later today, we are going the way I like it slow.
Wilma is doing great. We stopped at a BLM yesterday (Monday) and were going to spend the night we were also going to ride the 4-wheeler, after paying our $2.50 we went down to the camping area. We found there were so many flies we could not stay, the trash cans had not been emptied in some time. We left and went on down to Tatum where we are now in a city park with FHU for no charge. A much better deal.
The pictures are of The Valley of Fires in NM.

The campground is on an island of land which is called a Kipukas an is made up of Dakota Sandstone

9-29-08 The Forgotten Post

9-29-08
I thought this got posted a few days ago. The pictures you see of a canyon are of Canyon de Chelly in AZ. This was the end of a quest of mine that began around 1960. I saw a movie taken in this canyon with Gregory Peck and wanted to see the canyon every since. Well I made it, I saw the canyon and it is worth seeing.
We leave today from Valley of Fires do not know where we will stop.

On the Road Again

We are getting ready to hit the road. The campground will close 9-22-08, we should leave on the 23rd. Taking our time going to Texas; we are going by Canyon de Chelly in AZ, then make a stop or two in NM.
The low has been in the low 40 or mid to hi 30 so far. We are still looking for snow before we leave. The highs have been in the 50s. The campers have slowed down as school has started, and the weather is colder. Wilma is painting garbage cans for next year & I have been taking the seats off of the picnic tables. As this area will have 15 to 20 feet of snow, you have to do things I would ha

ve never thought of such as the fence has to be taken down (as the snow will break wire fence). The reason I am taken the seats off of the tables is the snow will bend them. All the windows will be boarded up on the buildings, of course the water will be turned off (the pipe is four feet deep).

8-27-08 Changes in Cedar Brakes

8-27-08
Changes in Cedar Brakes
There are a lot of changes going on, in color & in personal, the weather is also getting colder.
All of the school kids have gone, the seasonal help will soon. There will be left Paul (the superintendent), Matt, (the head ranger), Tina, (the office manger), Rick, (the head maintenance), and Jim, (Rick's helper) left. Ron and Paula (the other camp hosts) will leave on 9-15-08, and we will leave around the first of October.
This monument will not close during the winter as they have cross country skiing & snowmobiling.
The color has change all year long, when one flower stops blooming another one will start. I do not know which time the color was the best, now we have some plants turning golden due to winter coming.

These were white in the spring

8-27-08 A day for catching up & a hike

8-27-08
A day for catching up
Today started slow, all but one camper left, and we only had eight to start with, and in four sites were a group of cyclist. Wilma & I did some cleaning on the RV, that is she started & then I felt bad watching her so I did something also. Wilma did the windows (she found some that need work), she also change the filter in the AC, and vacuum. While she did this I cleaned out two of the bays, before we leave in October we need to go over the 5th wheel & pickup. This is a good time to start getting ready to go.
We hiked almost to the visitor center for the second day in a row. Wilma is a lot better, she says on 9-9-08 (when she goes back to the Doctor) she is going to walk in without the cane. Bet she does not use it either.
I fixed grilled chicken thighs, fresh zucchini, and mac & cheese for supper. Wilma read while I typed this (she also did my spelling).
We have had to campers come in while I was typing this at 9:00 PM, (one has a motor home that has leaving jacks do not work), the second one got the site the first one wanted while they were talking to me about a level site, but they were nice enough to move.
Before going to bed at 10:00 we had a snack of ice cream and fresh strawberries.

8-28-08 It is a tough job

8-28-08
This morning as I took Tank for his walk we came up to the camper in # 28. He was on a 1997 Goldwing Honda, (he bought on E-Bay). He was from Wichita Falls, Texas. We talked for about 45 minutes, (Wilma was about to send the cops after Tank). He was a very interesting man just retired, and this was his first trip after being retired the trip would last for 30 days. His wife was unable to go, but she wanted him to go, (he called her each day).
It is now 68 out side and was 55 for a low last night, we should hit 70 today. There is a north wind blowing, not hard just a breeze.
We got up at 7:00 & had hot tea & coffee, after Tanks walk around 10:00 we had breakfast eggs & toast (the toast was on home made bread). For lunch we had a pita sandwich. For supper it will be chicken & dumpling, then to bed at 9:00.
I will clean the restrooms & walk the campground about 4 times, Wilma is going to go to the visitor center for a few hours. I know it is a tough job but someone got to do it.

8-29-08 Day in the life of a camphost

8-29-08 Day in the life of a camp host
This is a wonderful day low last night of 52 and a high of 71, wonderful sunshine. After Tank and I went for our walk we came back to pancakes with strawberries, and syrup. Later I split some wood and Wilma did a litter check and put some more pay envelopes out, I also did a restroom check. After lunch of a pita sandwich Wilma went to the maintenance building with Paula (other camp host) where they were getting some garbage cans ready to paint. Ron (other camp host) spotted some smoke, he called me to see I saw the same thing, (I did) he then called it in. They already had fire trucks on it.
This afternoon we will make at least two rounds in the camp ground and be around to answer questions. So go the life of a camp host.
Tonight we will have a star party, what is a star party? There are some astronomers coming up from Las Vega AZ. They will give a talk with a power point presentation on stars then let all who wants to look through their telescopes.

8-31-08

8-31-08
We had rain last night around ¼ inch but it came in a short time with some hail. The hail up here is small and soft, in the four times it has hail, that is. The low was 47 it is only 48 now at 10:00 AM, very cloudy, good weather for soup or stew, I have put on some stew. For breakfast we had eggs and toast with home made bread.
Wilma gave a little boy some paper to help his family start a fire as the wood was wet from the rain, they had made two trips to get some kindling, we could tell by the smoke that they were having a hard time starting the fire.
We were told it might snow, but as yet it has not, we do expect snow before we leave.
